Top College Games in Week 1

by Barb Layton

This week’s biggest game is most likely the “Backyard Brawl” between the 17th ranked Pitt Panthers and the West Virginia Mountaineers. Like many others in Western PA, West Virginia and Northeast Ohio, I can’t wait to watch this game. It has been a number of years since the 2 teams have met. With the demise of the Big East the Pitt Panthers joined the ACC and the WV Mountaineers joined the Big 12. This ended the “Backyard Brawl”. Tonight, it is back.

Here is the list of the games to watch this week:

Thursday, September 1

  • West Virginia @ #17 Pittsburgh 7:00 PM
  • Penn State @ Purdue 8:00 PM

Friday, September 2

  • Western Michigan @ #15 Michigan State 7:00PM
  • TCU @ Colorado 10:00PM

Saturday, September 3

  • #11 Oregon @ #3 Georgia 3:30 PM
  • #23 Cincinnati @ #19 Arkansas 3:30 PM
  • #5 Notre Dame @ #2 Ohio State 7:30 PM

Sunday, September 4

  • Florida State @ LSU 7:30 PM

Free Agent Options for the Steelers

By James Layton

The Steelers are 2-0 so far in the preseason. Even though they have been winning they still have been struggling at a few positions. Three big ones that stand out are Left Guard, Inside Linebacker, and Outside Linebacker depth.

Left Guard is the biggest need for the team right now. Kevin Dotson and Kendrick Green have not been living up to their expectations. We do have John LeGlue who has been a good player when needed, but he isn’t a proven starter.

Myles Jack is looking to be one of the star free agent finds for former GM Kevin Cobert. But behind him the others are not living up to the standard. Rookie LB Mark Robinson is showing flashes, but he is still learning the position since this is his second season as Linebacker.

The depth at Outside Lineback has improved from the Seahawks game, but there is still work that needs to be done either in practice with James Vaughters and Ron’Dell Carter. Or is it time to turn to the free agent pool to see if we can bring a proven player in.

Let’s get into the free agents.

Steelers Players to Watch: Pre-Season Week 1 vs Seahawks

by James Layton

Finally, after six long months of no Steelers football. We have a game tonight against the Seahawks! It’s interesting both teams are looking to see who their starting Quarterback will for this season.

I know everyone will be watching the Steelers Quarterbacks the most tonight, but this Receiver group is something special. Rookie wide receiver George Pickens is ready to show why he is the best receiver to be drafted this year. Another rookie receiver that is ready to ball out is Calvin Austin, his speed is something special. During training camp so far, he’s been showcasing his speed multiple times that he can take a short pass to the house with just a move or two.

Another wide receiver that is looking to show he can still be an important part of this offense, is veteran Anthony Miller. Miller has been balling out this training camp. He is showing that he still has a connection with starting QB Mitch Trubisky.

Let’s get into the players to watch. These players are showing so far in training camp that they belong to be on an NFL roster this season. And some are ready to make the jump their second season.

  • 50 Delontae Scott, OLB
  • 93 Mark Robinson, ILB
  • 24 Damontae Kazee, S

2023 NFL Draft Prospects: Quarterbacks

This is going to be an interesting Quarterback Class. Compared to last season, this is a much deeper class with more talent. It’s going to be interesting to see how the battle between CJ Stroud and Bryce Young is going to play out.
